Los Angeles has long been infamous for its severe air pollution, particularly smog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, through a \u2028combination of policy, innovation, and public awareness, the city has achieved significant improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s how it happened and what continues to be done today:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

By the 1940s and 1950s, Los Angeles was facing a public health crisis due to its air pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city\u2019s geography \u2014 a basin surrounded by mountains \u2014 traps pollutants, and temperature inversions worsened the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rapid industrial growth, reliance on automobiles, and the burning of fossil fuels contributed heavily to the smog problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did they fix it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1947<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Established one of the first regional air pollution control agencies in the U.S., the Air Pollution Control District (APCD) to regulate industrial emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1970<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Clean Air Act set strict air quality standards. California implemented even tougher regulations, requiring catalytic converters on cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1984<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Smog Check Program was introduced to ensure vehicles met emissions standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1980s<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Factories and refineries were required to adopt cleaner technologies and reduce emissions. This included transitioning to cleaner fuels and using emission-control devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1990s<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate was introduced, pushing for electric and hybrid vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2000s<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Investment in public transit, including the expansion of the Los Angeles Metro, encouraged residents to reduce reliance on personal vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Committed to transitioning to \u2028100% renewable energy by 2045.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Implemented policies promoting walkable neighborhoods, bike lanes, and green spaces to reduce reliance on cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continuous air quality monitoring to ensure compliance with standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Educational programs and campaigns inform residents about reducing personal emissions and the importance of clean air initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, 7 months averaged \u2018Good\u2019 and 5 months \u2018Moderate\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While air pollution remains a concern, the city\u2019s overall air quality has improved dramatically, with very few days categorized as \u201cunhealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reduction in air pollution has led to measurable improvements in respiratory and cardiovascular health among residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yerevan MUST address its lethal situation.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cities like London and Los Angeles continuously implement measures to improve air quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While in Armenia, catalytic converters are still not a legal requirement, despite this being the law in developed countries for the past 50 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
